Result of 2018 Spring Research

74islanders, total 194people
gave me some observation records.

1:
The closer the south is to the island,
the tendency for the first certification date to be earlier.
This seems to indicate that the Swallow came from
the south and is going north along the island.
We observed many swallows from mid April to late May.

2:
In the count survey,
117 birds in Hahajima,
24 birds in Chichijima.
Total 141 birds at Ogasawara.

3:
On Miyakejima, one of Izu islamnds,
we found that first breeding from
June to July.

It is about 1 month later than the Swallow
in the Kanto region (in the vicinity of Tokyo).

It seems that there is a relation
between the time when the number of flights
arrives and the time of breeding.

Barn swallow Migration
            research

Introduction

Ogasawara islands, or Bonin islands
and Izu islands are archipelaga in Japan.
There are south of Tokyo.

We can observe Barn Swallows at Ogasawara
and Izu islamds both spring and autum.

However, It is not clear
whether the Ogasawara and Izu Islands are
the routes of the swallow migration
between wintering  and breeding areas.
Neither breeding nor overwintering
in the Ogasawara archipelago.

Purpose

If barn swallows are flying from
an overwintering area
where located south of the Ogasawara Islands,
Swallows will come as early as the south island.
We will clarify the ecology of swallow,
such as whether observation records of
every islander's swallow actually go northward.

Method of Research

I made 1,500 flyers
calling for participation in the survey,

I sent to the public facilities
such as the tourist association of the all island,
the harbor, the passenger waiting room.

If you observe the Barn swallows,
please send me an email

1,  when
2, where
3, how many
4, who
5, How

I received an observation record of Swallow from 194 islanders.
We have known the Swallow came from
the south and is going north along the island.
